One of the ways the Australian Maritime Safety Authority ensures safety of life, property and the protection of our sensitive environment is through Port State Control (PSC). Specialist marine surveyors are employed by AMSA at ports all around Australia and it is their job to ensure that ships visiting our ports comply with Australian standards. AMSA performed over 3100 of these PSC inspections last year in ports all around the country. Join Naweed Omar, a freemantle based surveyor, as he conducts a typical inspection on a bulk carrier.

The objective of this project is to develop new and novel ultrasonic phased array techniques, sensors and systems for finding defects and corrosion in safety critical areas of ships and tankers without taking the vessel out of the water. The Ship-Inspector technology will help operators, classification societies and regulatory agencies worldwide to manage risk more effectively. The Ship Inspector Consortium will disseminate the technology and associated training to the SMEs represented by the participant SME-AGs. There are 12,000 SMEs involved in the €50 billion inspection and maint...
Shipping can be a risky business. To operate efficiently and minimise liability, charterers and all industry players must take all reasonable steps to ensure ships are being properly operated and are in a suitable condition to complete a voyage safely. The risks from using substandard ships include: casualties - minor delays through to total loss, which carry severe human, environmental and commercial costs undue delays and costs while the ship is inspected in port falling foul of regulators rising insurance costs Ship vetting involves sourcing data on ships and evaluating the potential risks such as the ship’s structural integrity, competence of owners, managers and crew, past casualties and incidents. RightShip provides a comprehensive and cost-effective online vetting tool for ships ...
http://www.euronews.com/ The maintenance of seafaring ships can be a laborious and costly expense. The damp and dirty inspections which take many man hours must be done at regular intervals to ensure their sea worthiness. This normally involves taking the huge vessels to dock in poor countries where labour cost are lower, but a team of boffins have thought up and started testing a project which should help save time and money for this task. Leonidas Drikos, the managing director of the project explains: "The project is about inspecting ships with the assistance of robots. We implemented a fleet of robots, different kinds of robots, that will altogether undertake the task." The steel hold of a cargo ship in Bulgaria is quite literally crawling with robot inspectors. Each one takes a sl...
CMA CGM required the internal inspection of a ballast tank of one of its container ships, the CMA CGM ANDROMEDA. Flying in complex and pitch-dark confined spaces, Elios has demonstrated its capacity to deliver a quicker and safer method to inspect ballasts.

SGS Minerals Services has tested the collision-tolerant flying robot designed by Flyability SA for the vessel’s hold inspections. The trial demonstrated that the collision-resilient robot can fly into the hold on board the vessel and can operate on the vessel with running engines - the vessel was under loading at time of trial. The robot can fly into the spaces hardly accessible or totally inaccessible by an inspector.
Everything was in order. I actually changed the video, by adding the music and pictures, after meeting the volunteer a few weeks later. He enthusiastically asked if I put music to the video and I said no.
